Was Arjuna really the undefeated warrior of Mahabharata?

Defeats Of Arjuna Was Arjuna really the undefeated warrior of Mahabharata? Let's look at some 40 of his defeats which says otherwise. _________________________________________ 1ST DEFEAT OF ARJUNA AT THE HANDS OF KARNA: BORI CE, Section- 12, Draupadi swayamvar parva: ‘Seeing Vaikartana Karna rush towards him, the wise Arjuna stretched his mighty bow and pierced him with three arrows. The impact of these sharp arrows stunned Radheya31 and he approached with greater circumspection. Then those two invincible warriors fought violently, each eager to vanquish the other. Such was the speed that they became invisible.32 “Look at the strength in my arms”, “See how I countered that”, they taunted each other in words that only warriors understand. Seeing the valour in Arjuna’s arms, unparalleled on earth, Vaikartana Karna fought even more vigorously. REPULSING ARJUNA’S SWIFT ARROWS, KARNA SHOUTED OUT ALOUD AND THE WARRIORS APPLAUDED HIS FEAT. ‘Karna said, “O foremost among Brahma...

I. MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT PREVIOUS BIRTH OF KARNA

DEAR KARNIANS, KARNA HAD NO PREVIOUS BIRTH ACCORDING TO THE VED VYASSA MAHABHARAT. MAHABHARATA SAYS HALF PORTION OF SURYA WAS INCARNATED AS KARNA.

IF YOU SEARCH ON GOOGLE 'PREVIOUS BIRTH OF KARNA' THEN YOU WILL FIND MANY INTERNET SITES, BLOGS, ARTICLES HAVING STORY OF KARNA BEING SAHASTRAKAVACH/DAMBODBHAVA IN HIS PREVIOUS BIRTH. BUT YOU WON'T FIND ANY AUTHENTIC REFERENCE TO THIS FICTIONAL STORY. SOME EVEN CLAIMS THAT THIS STORY BELONGS TO BHAGWAT PURAN. I HAVE RECITED ENTIRE BHAGWAT PURAN BUT NOWHERE I FOUND A STORY OF KARNA BEING DAMBODBHAVA/SAHASTRAKAVACH. THATS WHY MANY PEOPLES SIMPLY WRITE THIS STORY WITHOUT GIVING ANY PROOF AND PEOPLE HAVING NO KNOWLEDGE OF AUTHENTIC TEXT BLINDLY FOLLOW SUCH FOLK/FICTIONAL/CROOK STORIES. LET'S EXPOSE IT

THIS THREAD IS DIVIDED INTO 3 SECTION

SECTION-1 : REASON BEHIND KARNA'S BIRTH WITH NATURAL ARMOUR-RINGS

SECTION-2 : EXPOSING DAMBHODBHAVA/SAHASAHASTRAKAVACH

SECTION-3 : EXPOSING LATEST DEMON NARKASUR

● SECTION-1 : REASON BEHIND KARNA'S BIRTH WITH NATURAL ARMOUR-RINGS

Many people have a doubt about birth of karna along with armour-rings. Mahabharata says that Karna was born with an armour because Kunti wanted his birth with an armour and it was condition of kunti before surya that her son should be born with an armour.

‘Kunti said, “O dispeller of everything that is dark! If I obtain a son through you, may he have earrings and armour. May he be mighty-armed, brave and immensely strong.” ‘Surya replied, “He will be mighty-armed and possess earrings. O fortunate one! He will be clad in divine armour and both of these will originate in amrita.” ‘Kunti said, “If my son’s earrings and the excellent armour are created out of amrita, as you have said, you may beget him on me. O god! O illustrious one! Then I will unite with you. May he have valour, beauty and energy and be united with dharma, like you.” ‘Surya replied, “O queen! O one who has been excited! O timid one! Aditi herself gave me these earrings. I will give them to him, together with this excellent armour.” ‘Pritha said, “O illustrious god! O god! O lord of the cows! If my son is going to be as you have said, I will happily unite with you.”

[So Karna was born with an armour only due to desire of Kunti, otherwise his birth would be natural i.e without any armour]

Lord Surya had obtained rings from devi aditi and he gifted rings to little Karna.

Transfer of Rings

Devi Aditi→Lord Surya→Karna

[Lord Surya to Kunti]

Surya then said, 'O princess, O excellent damsel, these ear-rings had been given to me by Aditi. O timid lady, I will bestow them, as also this excellent mail, on thy son!'

http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/m03/m03305.htm

RESULT - Armour of Karna belongs to lord surya and Rings belongs to Devi Aditi. Dambodbhava/Sahastrakavach is totally fictional character according to ved vyassa mahabharata

● SECTION-2 : EXPOSING DEMON DAMBODBHAVA/SAHASTRAKAVACH

Mahabharata has described battle between Demon Dambodbhava and Nara-Narayana. Lord Parshuran has recited this story in kuru assembly

Parv - Udyoga Parv

Section - XCVI

King Dambhodbhava, still desirous of battle, repeatedly summoned those Rishisto fight. Nara, then, O Bharata, taking up a handful of grass-blades, said, 'Desirous of battle as thou art, come, O Kshatriya, and fight! Take up all thy arms, and array thy troops. I will curb thy eagerness for battle hereafter!' Dambhodbhava then said, If, O ascetic, thou thinkest this weapon of thine fit to be used against us, I shall fight with thee though thou mayest use that weapon, for I have come hither desirous of fighting.' Saying this, Dambhodbhava with all his troops, desirous of slaying that ascetic, covered all sides with a shower of arrows. That ascetic, however, by means of those blades of grass, baffled all those terrible shafts of the king that were capable of mangling the bodies of hostile warriors. The invincible Rishi then let off towards the king his own terrible weapon made of grass-blades and which was incapable of being counteracted. And highly wonderful was that which happened, for that ascetic, incapable of missing his aim, pierced and cut off, by those grass-blades alone, the eyes and ears and noses of the hostile warriors, aided also by his power of illusion.

And beholding the entire welkin whitened by those grass-blades, the king fell at the feet of the Rishi and said, 'Let me be blessed! Ever inclined to grant protection unto those that sought it, Nara then, O king, said unto that monarch, 'Be obedient to the Brahmanas and be virtuous. Never do so again. O king, O tiger among monarchs, a conqueror of hostile towns, a Kshatriya mindful of the duties of his own or, should never, within even his heart, be as thou art. Filled with pride, never insult anybody on any occasion, be inferior or superior to thee. Even such conduct would befit thee. Acquiring wisdom, abandoning covetousness and pride, controlling thy soul, restraining thy passions, practising forgiveness and humility, and becoming amiable, O king, go, and cherish thy subjects. Without ascertaining the strength and weakness of men, never insult any one under any circumstances. Blessed be thou, and with our leave, go hence, and never again behave in this way. At our command, enquire thou always of the Brahmanas as to what is for thy good!

The king then, worshipping the feet of those two illustrious Rishis, returned to his city, and from that time began to practise righteousness.

RESULT -

Let alone 1000 armours, Demon Dambodbhava didn't posses even single armour. So the name Sahastrakavach is fictional

Dambodbhava was easily defeated by Nara-narayana. He was not devotee of Lord surya but after defeat, Dambodbhava became devotee of Narayana

The story of Dambodbhava ended here - Happy Ending

Do you find here even name of Karna ? LOL.

___________________________________________________________________________

● SECTION-3 : EXPOSING DEMON NARKASUR

AFTER DAMBODBHAVA/SAHASTRAKAVACH, SOME PEOPLE EVEN CLAIMED KARNA TO BE NARKASUR. TO PROVE THEIR POINT, THEY HAVE QUOTED FEW LINES FROM MAHABHARATA WHERE SOUL OF NARKASUR HAD ENTERED THE BODY OF KARNA ACCORDING TO STORY RECITED BY SOME DEMONS BEFORE PRINCE DURYODHANA. SO LET'S EXPOSE THIS THEORY AS WELL

1) INTRODUCTION OF DEMON NARKASUR

Demon Narkasur was a son of earth and he was slain by Lord Krishna in the presence of Satyabhama. Karna was elder than krishna. So when Krishna slew Narkasur that time karna was already born on earth even he was married. Then how can demon narkasur born as Karna? Does it make any sense ?

2) THE AUTHENTIC REFERENCE GIVEN BY THE KARNA HATERS

Quote -

The soul of the slain Naraka hath assumed the form of Karna. Recollecting his former hostility he will encounter both Kesava and Arjuna. And that mighty warrior and foremost of smiters, proud of his prowess will vanquish Arjuna in battle as also all thy enemies.

http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/m03/m03250.htm

[The above authentic quote belong to KMG ved vyassa mahabharata. Same quote has been used by Pandava followers to fool people. If you read it carefully then it was nothing but hallucination of Duryodhana. Some demons told him that Soul of narkasur had entered the body of Karna. So Karna was haunted by ghost. LOL.]

Even if we believed the claim of demons and believed hallucination of Duryodhan to be truth still it was not fault of Karna if he was haunted by the soul of Demon Narkasur.

Just take an example from bollywood movie 'Hello Brother' to understand this concept. In this movie, After death of Salman Khan his soul usually enters the body of Arbaaz Khan. So does that mean Arbaaz Khan is an incarnation of Salman Khan ? LOL. Yes, we can say that Arbaaz khan is haunted by the soul of Salman Khan but it has nothing to do with the concept of incarnation

3) PITAMAH BHISHMA, DRONA AND OTHER WARRIORS TOO HAUNTED BY THE SOULS OF VARIOUS DEMONS

[Demons to Duryodhana]

Other Asuras will also possess Bhishma and Drona and Karna and others. Possessed by those Asuras, these heroes will cast away their kindness and fight with thy foes. Indeed, when the Danavas will enter their heart and possess them completely.

http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/m03/m03250.htm

[Apart from Karna, Bhishma and Drona too haunted by the souls of demons as per story recited by demons. Does that mean Bhishma was an incarnation of demon? ROLF]

4) LORD SHIVA HAD ENTERED THE BODY OF ASHWATTHAMA

The holy one said, "Verily, Drona's son had sought the aid of that highest of all the gods, the eternal Mahadeva. It was for this that he succeeded in slaying, single-handed, so large a number of warriors. If Mahadeva be gratified, he can bestow even immortality. Girisha can give such valour as will succeed in checking Indra himself. I know Mahadeva truly, O bull of Bharata's race! I know also his various acts of old.

http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/m10/m10017.htm

[Lord Shiva had entered the body of Ashwatthama and slew entire panchal army on 18th night. So by using same logic, Ashwatthama should be called as incarnation of Lord Shiva]

5) QUOTES FROM RAMAYANA ABOUT SUCH HANUTED CASES

a) In Ramayan, Goddess Saraswati had entered the body of manthara in order to poison the mind of Queen Kaikayi. Does that mean Manthara was an incarnation Goddess Saraswati? LOL

b) Demon Kumbhakarna was also made to ask d boon of sleep by Goddess Saraswati. Goddess saraswati entered his body. Does that mean Kumbhakarna was Goddess Saraswati? LOL

RESULT -

Karna had no relation with Demon Narkasur. Yes, Karna had conquered Bhagdatta-son of Narkasur during his Digvijaya

___________________________________________________________________________

MAHABHARATA SAYS, BHIMA WAS DEMON AS CONFESSED BY FOOT SOLDIERS

- Bhima drunk blood of Dussasana twice. Unique quality of demon

- Bhima had married Rakshasi hidimba. Only Demons were allowed to marry Rakshasis

- Bhima was born on same day when Duryodhana was born. So it's possible that Bhima was an incarnation of Demon Kali because all acts of Bhima are coversant with the acts dones of demons

CONCLUSION

Karna had no relation with Dambodbhava/Sahastrakavach/Narkasur

II.(Story of Previous Birth)

According to Padma Purana, which is considered as a Satvik Purana, Svedaja (Karna) was an ansha/portion of Lord Bramha and Raktaja (Arjuna) was an ansha/portion of Lord Vishnu. Svedaja (Karna) had defeated Raktaja (Arjuna) in their previous birth.

Translation:

Once during a quarrel between Siva and Brahma, the former nipped off Brahma’s head. Some drops of sweat appeared on the forehead of the angry Brahma, and from the sweat which Brahma wiped with his hand arose a legendary archer wearing a thousand shields, bow and quiver. That person was Svedaja. He asked Brahma what he should, do and the former granted him permission to destroy Siva. He then approached Siva with bow drawn and the frightened Siva ran to Visnu and sought refuge. Svedaja followed Siva and when Vimu, seeing him, raised a loud noise `Hum’. Siva prostrated at Visnu’s feet.

POINT-1: Svedaja (Karna) was born as an ansha/portion of Lord Bramha. ( Bramha has been originated from Vishnu so technically Karna was portion of Vishnu himself)

POINT-2: Svedaja had 1,000 ordinary shields/armours, one bow and one quiver.

POINT-3: Under the instructions of Lord Brahma, Svedaja attacked Lord Shiva and Lord Shiva took shelter at Vaikuntha (the abode of Lord Vishnu).

POINT-4: Svedaja fell unconsious due to the effect of Mantras uttered by Lord Vishnu.

Siva extended the skull in his hand towards Vishnu requesting something to be given to him. Mahavishnu, who had nothing else to give Siva, put his right hand into the skull as alms, Siva wounded the hand with his Sala (three-pronged weapon) and pure red blood began flowing from the hand into the skull. The blood continued flowing for a thousand years in a length of fifty yojanas and thickness of ten yojanas. At the end of the period, Vishnu asked whether the skull was not filled yet, and looking into the skull with his three eyes Siva answered that it was full. Then Vishnu stopped the flow of blood, and Siva, in the presence of Vishnu, looked into the blood for a thousand years and stirred it with his hand. The blood gradually turned into bubble and a person possessing thousands of hands arose and as growing as fire appeared in skull. He had crown on his head and he held in his hand a bow and a quiver. He wore gloves on his hands. That was Raktaja. Incarnated as Nara. Looking at Raktaja, Siva told Visnu thus: “This master in archery is Nara. You spoke Nara, and let his name, therefore be Nara. Oh Narayana, you both will be called Naranarayarras. This Nara will be of help to you on behalf of the Dev as and also in the sustenance and protection of the world. He will further help you to kill the Asuras. Nara, the great intellectual that he is, will become a Muni, of surpassing wisdom. Brahma’s divine fifth head possesses so much of effulgence. Nara is created from that effulgence and also from the blood from your hands and my look at it. He will annihilate all enemies in war. He will be a terror to those persons who cannot be conquered by you, Indra and the other Devas.
While Visnu stood there amazed Raktaja praised him and Siva with folded hands and asked from the skull what he should do. Then Siva ordered him thus - "You kill Svedaja created by Brahma with his own effulgcnce." And Siva led Raktaja out of the skull by his hands and told him again:- “Look, here lies the terrible person I spoke about made unconscious by the cry of “Hum’ by Visnu. Awake him immediately.” After having said this Siva disappeared. Nara, in the presence of Narayana, kicked the unconscious Svedaja with his left foot, and he came out of his unconscious state.

POINT-1: Raktaja was born as an ansha/portion of Lord Vishnu.

POINT-2: Raktaja had 1,000 arms, 500 bows, one armour and one crown.

POINT-3: Lord Vishnu ordered Raktaja to kill Svedaja. Svedaja regained consciousness and the battle started.

Translation:

The fierce fight that happened between Svedaja and Raktaja continued for two years. By then Svedaja lost every shield except the last one and Raktaja had lost everything except his two bare arms to fight with. At this stage Vishnu in GREAT ALARM went and asked Bramha whether Raktaja will not be able to kill Svedaja. Bramha answered that in the next birth Raktaja (Nara) will be able to kill Svedaja. Saying 'Right, let that be so', Vishnu returned to the battlefield and made them withdraw from fighting with the assurance that they would be given an opportunity to fight again during the period of Kali and Dwapar Yuga.

POINT-1: Svedaja lost 999 armours during the fight, but he still had his bow and arrows. So, he was armed/weaponed.

POINT-2: Raktaja lost 998 arms, 500 bows, 1 armour and 1 crown. He was left with only two hands and virtually no weapons. So, Raktaja was unarmed/weaponless. Practically, he was in a situation of great peril, because he was standing unarmed before his armed adversary.

POINT-3: Lord Vishnu realized the superiority of Svedaja over Raktaja and admitted that Raktaja was incapable of defeating Svedaja in battle.

POINT-4: At the request of Vishnu, Bramha granted a boon so that in the next birth Raktaja could be able to kill Svedaja.

POINT-5: Lord Vishnu stopped their fight in order to rescue Raktaja from certain death at the hands of Svedaja.

THIS PROVES THAT SVEDAJA ALMOST KILLED RAKTAJA.

Translation:

Afterwards Vishnu directed Aditya (Sun) and Akhandala (Indra) to look after Raktaja and Svedaja. He told further: — "At the end of the Dvapara Yuga you should see that Svedaja is reborn, in the interests of the Devas, as your son. In the Yadu dynasty will be born a very powerful fellow called Sura and he will have a very beautiful daughter named Pritha. Durvasa will advise her some Mantras as a boon and she will have some sons from the Devas whom she will invoke with the Mantras. With that object in view, while in her periods, she would, at the time of dawn gaze at you with love. Then he (Svedaja) will be born as the son called Vasusena of Kunti, the virgin."
The Sun-God agreed to obey the above instructions of Vishnu and told him further, "I shall procreate in the virgin Kunti a very powerful and valiant son who will become well-known in the world as Karna. He will gift away all wealth to the Bramhanas." After saying this Surya disappeared.

POINT-1: Vishnu had ordered Surya to take away Karna with him.

POINT-2: As per the blessings of Lord Vishnu, Karna was born to be a 'Danveer'.

Translation:

After this Visnu told Indra as follows:- "You should, at the end of the Dwapara Yuga see that this Nara, born from blood, is reborn as an aspect of yours on earth. King Pandu will one day go into the forest with his wives, Kunti and Madri, and he will then become the object of an animal’s curse. He will therefore, in a spirit of renunciation, go to mount Sata~:raga where he would ask Kunti to become a mother by another man. Unwilling to do so Kunti will desire to have sons by Devas, and when she prays to you, you should favour her with this Nara as son.

Translation :

Devendra raised a legal objection to the above injunction of Visnu as follows:- "You, who incarnated yourself as Rama in the twenty-seventh Yuga of the last Manvantara for the purpose of killing Ravana, killed my son Bali. Therefore I do not wish to procreate Nara as my son." To this objection of Indra, Vishnu assured him that as a penalty for the mistake of killing Bali, he would be a companion of Nara (Arjuna) who would be born as lndra’s son.

POINT-1: Indra asked for the penalty for the killing of his son Vali by Rama (Vishnu incarnated).

POINT-2: Vishnu promised that this time he would support Indra's son Raktaja (Arjuna) to kill the son of Surya, Svedaja (Karna).

■ CONCLUSION:

In each birth, Karna was more powerful than Arjuna. Just like at the time of Dwapara Yuga, in the previous birth also Arjuna was almost killed by Karna but in the end he was rescued by Vishnu.

Karna was an ansha/portion of Bramha, hence he was a demi-god, and he born to be one of the greatest 'Danveer's of all times.
